When to use IIF instead of QBO
A QBO file goes through the Bank Feeds window in QuickBooks, one transaction at a time. When you have months of history to enter, or the Web Connect import keeps failing for your bank, an IIF file posts everything to the accounts you name in one go.
When to use IIF instead of QBO
| Situation | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Ongoing monthly bank feed | QBO (matches and skips duplicates) |
| Catching up a year of history | IIF |
| Bank not accepted by Web Connect | IIF |
| Everything belongs to one expense account | IIF with that account as offset |
How to convert QBO to IIF
- Drop one or more QBO, QFX or OFX files.
- Open "File settings": type the QuickBooks bank account name and the offset account.
- Press IIF, back up your company file, and import with File, Utilities, Import, IIF Files.
How each transaction is written
Money out becomes a CHECK from the bank account and money in a DEPOSIT to it, each with a split line to the offset account so the entry balances. The payee goes to the Name column (up to 41 characters, the QuickBooks limit) and the full description to the memo. The cheque or bank reference goes to the document number.
IIF has no duplicate check, so if the QBO files overlap with transactions already in QuickBooks, remove those rows first: convert to Excel, delete them, save as CSV and use the CSV to IIF converter.
Nothing is uploaded. The files are read and written by code running in your browser, so it works with bank data you would rather not send anywhere, and there is no limit on how many files you convert.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल
Why convert QBO to IIF?
To post many transactions at once to named accounts in QuickBooks Desktop, or when Web Connect will not accept your bank's file.
Does the IIF keep payee names?
Yes. The payee goes to the Name column and the full description to the memo of each line.
Can I use it for QuickBooks Online?
No. QuickBooks Online does not import IIF; upload the QBO or a CSV there instead.
Will it create new accounts?
Only if the account names you type do not match existing ones. Copy them exactly from the chart of accounts.
Is it free, and is there a limit?
Yes, it is free with no sign up and no limit, because the conversion runs in your browser and uses none of our servers.
