What goes in a boat bill of sale?

A boat bill of sale records the sale of a boat from seller to buyer: the date, the price, and exactly which boat, engine and trailer changed hands. Most states ask for it, with the signed title where boats are titled, before they register the boat to the new owner.

What goes in a boat bill of sale?

DetailWhy it matters
Hull identification number (HIN)The 12 character number on the transom identifies the boat
Year, make, model and lengthDescribes the vessel for the registration office
Engine make, horsepower and serialOutboards are often registered or titled separately
Trailer and its VINA boat trailer has its own title or registration on the road
Price, date and paymentUsed for sales or use tax
As is clause and signaturesLimits claims after the sale

Boat, engine and trailer are separate

In many states the hull, the outboard motor and the trailer each have their own title or registration. List all three on the bill of sale and sign over each title. A documented vessel (US Coast Guard) also needs the Coast Guard's own bill of sale form for the documentation change.
