How the converter reads a statement

A bank statement converter turns the transactions printed on a statement into data that a spreadsheet or accounting program can import. This one reads digital PDFs from online banking, scanned paper statements and photos taken with a phone, and gives you six file types from one run.

How the converter reads a statement

  1. Text first. A PDF from online banking has a text layer, which is read exactly as printed.
  2. OCR for scans and photos. When there is no text layer, each page is drawn and read by OCR in your browser.
  3. Rows. Our own AI server splits each page's text into date, description, reference, money out, money in and balance. It copies amounts; it does not calculate them.
  4. Checks in code. Every row's balance must equal the previous balance plus money in minus money out, and the opening plus all movements must equal the closing balance. A row read on the wrong side is fixed and marked; anything else that does not add up is marked "check".

Which file should you download?

FileUse it for
Excel (.xlsx)Reconciling, filtering and sharing; rows to check are highlighted
CSVGoogle Sheets, Xero, QuickBooks Online and most accounting imports
QBOQuickBooks Web Connect (Online and Desktop bank feeds)
QFXQuicken Web Connect
OFXOther money programs that read Open Financial Exchange files
IIFQuickBooks Desktop transaction import, booked to an account you name

Getting a clean result from a scan or photo

OCR is only as good as the image. Lay the page flat in good light, fill the frame with the whole page, and avoid shadows and folds. A 200 to 300 dpi scan reads better than a photo. After the run, the balance check points straight at any row the OCR misread, so you compare a few rows instead of the whole statement.

Importing into QuickBooks or Quicken

QuickBooks and Quicken read an Intuit bank ID inside QBO and QFX files. Open "File settings" under the download buttons to set the account type, account number and, if the program refuses the file, your own bank's Intuit ID. Already have the files and only need another format? The bank statement to Excel page covers the plain spreadsheet case.

Your files are opened in your own browser. A digital PDF's text is read directly; a scan or photo is read by OCR on your device, and the OCR engine downloads once from a public CDN. Only the text goes over an encrypted connection to our own AI server, is used once and is not saved. Nobody needs an account.

Частые вопросы

Can it convert a scanned bank statement?

Yes. A scan or photo has no text layer, so each page is read by OCR in your browser first. Check the rows the balance check marks; OCR can misread a digit on a poor image.

How do I convert a bank statement to QBO?

Choose the PDF, wait for the rows, then press QBO (QuickBooks). In QuickBooks Desktop use File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files; in QuickBooks Online use Banking, Upload transactions.

Is my statement uploaded?

No. The file is opened in your browser. Only the text of each page goes to our own AI server to be split into rows, and it is not saved. A PDF password never leaves your device.

What if QuickBooks rejects the QBO file?

Open File settings, enter your own bank's Intuit ID and the account number, then download again. QuickBooks matches the file to a bank by that ID.

Can I convert several months at once?

Convert each statement file in turn; each is up to 20 pages. To combine the results, use the CSV files or join them in Excel.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign up. Each file counts as one use of a fair use limit of a few runs per hour, which keeps our own AI server fast for everyone.
