What are shipping marks?
Shipping marks are the words and numbers printed or labelled on every export carton so that it can be matched to the documents, found in a container and delivered to the right buyer. Customs officers, forwarders and the buyer's warehouse all read them. This shipping marks generator prints a label for every carton in a shipment, numbered automatically.
Main mark and side mark
| Main mark (front) | Side mark (side) |
|---|---|
| Buyer's mark or initials, often in a box or diamond | Item or style number |
| Destination port or city | Quantity per carton |
| PO or order number | Net weight (N.W.) and gross weight (G.W.) |
| Carton number: C/No. 1 of 120 | Measurement (MEAS): carton size |
| Country of origin: MADE IN … | Handling marks |
Why shipping marks matter
- The marks and numbers column of the commercial invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading must match the cartons. A mismatch can hold up clearance.
- Country of origin marking is required on goods and their containers in many countries, including the US.
- Carton numbers make a short shipment obvious and help the buyer check the count.
Handling marks
Add the handling instructions the cargo needs: THIS SIDE UP, FRAGILE, KEEP DRY, HANDLE WITH CARE, DO NOT STACK, USE NO HOOKS. For dangerous goods, use the official hazard labels instead of plain text.
Tips
Use one style of marks across the whole order, put the main mark on two opposite sides and the side mark on the other two, and keep the PO number exactly as the buyer wrote it. For the pallets, print matching pallet labels.
