Michigan bill of sale form: fill in, print and sign

A Michigan bill of sale records that a seller sold a vehicle, boat or other item to a buyer for a stated price on a stated date. Michigan transfers ownership on the assigned title at a Secretary of State office or through the online title transfer. A bill of sale is a useful record but does not replace the title.

Is a bill of sale required in Michigan?

Michigan does not require the bill of sale to be notarized.

How to transfer a vehicle in Michigan

  1. The seller signs the title over to the buyer and fills in the odometer reading.
  2. Seller and buyer sign a bill of sale with the price and date.
  3. The seller removes the plate. The state suggests buyer and seller visit a Secretary of State office together.
  4. The buyer transfers the title within 15 days. An online transfer is available for one individual seller and one individual buyer when the buyer is not financing the vehicle.

Transfers between immediate family members are exempt from the use tax, but the title still has to be transferred.

How to fill in this Michigan bill of sale

The form above opens with Michigan already chosen. Enter the seller and buyer, the county, what is being sold, the year, make, model and VIN (or hull ID for a boat), the odometer reading and the price. The price is written out in words, and the text is written for you as you type. Choose "Yes" under notary acknowledgment to add a notary block, then print two copies and sign them. Download a PDF or an editable Word file, or print.

Rules, fees and forms change. Check the current requirements on the Michigan Department of State (Secretary of State) website before you sell. For other states, see bill of sale by state or the general bill of sale template.
