North Carolina bill of sale form: fill in, print and sign

A North Carolina bill of sale records that a seller sold a vehicle, boat or other item to a buyer for a stated price on a stated date. North Carolina transfers ownership on the title and the Title Application (MVR-1). For a private purchase the DMV also lists the Odometer Disclosure Statement (MVR-180) and the Damage Disclosure Statement (MVR-181).

Is a bill of sale required in North Carolina?

Yes for the title: the back of a North Carolina title and the MVR-1 must be notarized. The bill of sale itself does not need a notary.

How to transfer a vehicle in North Carolina

  1. Seller and buyer complete the back of the North Carolina title and have it notarized.
  2. The buyer completes the Title Application (MVR-1), which must also be notarized.
  3. Complete the Odometer Disclosure Statement (MVR-180) when it applies, and the Damage Disclosure Statement (MVR-181).
  4. Sign a bill of sale as your record, then take everything to a license plate agency or mail it to NCDMV.

When co-owners are recorded on the title, every required signature must be notarized and come with a copy of each owner's license or a power of attorney.

How to fill in this North Carolina bill of sale

The form above opens with North Carolina already chosen. Enter the seller and buyer, the county, what is being sold, the year, make, model and VIN (or hull ID for a boat), the odometer reading and the price. The price is written out in words, and the text is written for you as you type. Choose "Yes" under notary acknowledgment to add a notary block, then print two copies and sign them.
