Steel falls under HSN 7208 to 7229.
Steel has no single HSN code: chapter 72 sorts it by form. Flat products are 7208 (hot rolled, wide), 7209 (cold rolled), 7210 (coated) and 7211 or 7212 (narrow strip); long products are 7213 (wire rod), 7214 (bars), 7216 (angles and channels) and 7217 (wire). Stainless steel has its own headings 7218 to 7223. All are taxed at 18%.
| Code | Description |
|---|---|
| 720851 | Hot rolled plates above 10 mm thick |
| 720917 | Cold rolled coils 0.5 mm to 1 mm thick |
| 721391 | Wire rod in coils |
| 721420 | Ribbed bars (TMT) |
| 721640 | Angles and tee sections |
| 721710 | Wire, not plated |
The GST rate on steel is 18%.
| GST rate | Within a state | Between states |
|---|---|---|
| 18% | CGST 9% + SGST 9% | IGST 18% |

The number of digits depends on your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year. Steel has no single code, so use the heading of the exact item you sell; the example below uses 7208.
| Turnover last year | Digits | Write |
|---|---|---|
| Up to Rs 5 crore | 4 on B2B invoices, optional on B2C | 7208 |
| Above Rs 5 crore | 6 on every invoice | 720851, 720917, 721391 |
| Export or import | 8 on the shipping bill or bill of entry | From the Customs Tariff, chapter 72 |
Here is how a line for steel looks on a tax invoice within one state: 10 × tonne at Rs 54,000.00 each, taxed at 18%. The figures are an example, not a market price.
| Item | HSN | Qty | Rate (Rs) | Taxable (Rs) | CGST (Rs) | SGST (Rs) | Total (Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel | 7208 | 10 × tonne | 54,000.00 | 5,40,000.00 | 48,600.00 | 48,600.00 | 6,37,200.00 |
Sold to a buyer in another state, the same line carries IGST of Rs 97,200.00 instead of CGST and SGST. Make the full invoice with the GST invoice format: it fills in the tax split, round off and amount in words.
Chapter 72 (Iron and steel) covers: Pig iron, scrap, ingots, bars, rods, sheets, coils, wire and sections of iron or steel.
Products often bought, sold or invoiced together with steel:
Steel falls under HSN 7208 to 7229: iron and non alloy steel: coils and sheets (7208 to 7212), bars, rods, angles and wire (7213 to 7217). Common 6 digit codes are 720851 for hot rolled plates above 10 mm thick and 720917 for cold rolled coils 0.5 mm to 1 mm thick.
18%: CGST 9% plus SGST 9% on a sale within a state, or IGST 18% on a sale between states.
There is no single code for steel: use the heading of the item you sell. If your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year was up to Rs 5 crore, write the 4 digit code, such as 7208, on B2B invoices (optional on B2C invoices). Above Rs 5 crore, write 6 digits, such as 720851, on every invoice. Shipping bills and bills of entry need the full 8 digit code from the Customs Tariff.
