GTIN Check Digit Calculator: UPC and EAN

Calculate the check digit for a UPC, EAN, GTIN-14 or SSCC number, or check that a full barcode number is valid.

7, 11, 12, 13 or 17 digits

Check digit

2

Type

GTIN-12 (UPC-A)

Full code

036000291452

Weights 3, 1, 3, 1… from the right; check digit = (10 − sum mod 10) mod 10

A correct check digit only means the number is well formed. To sell in stores, the number must come from your own GS1 company prefix.

How the GTIN check digit works

The check digit is the last digit of a GTIN barcode number (UPC, EAN, ITF-14 or SSCC). It is calculated from the other digits, so a scanner can tell when a number was misread or mistyped. This calculator works it out, or checks a number you already have.

How the GTIN check digit works

  1. Starting from the right of the digits before the check digit, multiply them by 3, 1, 3, 1 and so on.
  2. Add the results.
  3. The check digit is the number that brings the sum up to the next multiple of 10.

Example, UPC 03600029145?: the weighted sum is 58, the next multiple of 10 is 60, so the check digit is 2 and the full code is 036000291452.

A valid check digit does not make a number yours: retail barcodes must use your own GS1 company prefix. For internal codes, use the SKU generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a UPC check digit?

Weight the first 11 digits 3, 1, 3, 1 from the right, add them, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.

Can I make up my own barcode numbers?

Not for retail. Shops and marketplaces check that the number belongs to your GS1 company prefix.

Is the check digit the same for EAN and UPC?

Yes. All GS1 numbers use the same mod 10 method; a UPC with a leading zero is the same EAN-13.

Is the calculator free?

Yes. No sign up. It runs in your browser, and you can copy the result or save it as a PDF.
