Straight vs order bill of lading

A straight bill of lading is a bill of lading made out to a named consignee. It is not negotiable: the carrier delivers the goods only to that consignee, and the bill cannot be endorsed to anyone else. It suits goods already paid for, shipments between related companies and gifts or samples.

Before you choose straight

Because delivery goes to the named consignee, do not use a straight bill unless you have been paid or trust the buyer. In some countries carriers release goods under a straight bill without the original. For an order bill use the bill of lading generator.

This is a draft for your records and for the carrier: only the carrier or its agent issues and signs the real bill.

Frequently asked questions

Is a straight bill of lading a document of title?

It is not negotiable, so it cannot transfer the goods to someone else by endorsement. Some countries still require the original to be shown on delivery.

When should I use a straight bill of lading?

When the goods are already paid, are sent between companies of one group, or are samples or gifts.

Can a straight bill of lading be used with a letter of credit?

Rarely. Banks usually want an order bill so they hold title until payment.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign up and no watermark. Download a PDF or Word file, or print it, as often as you need.

Is my information saved?

Only in your own browser, so you can come back to the draft. Nothing is uploaded to our servers.
