Import VAT or GST is charged on the customs value plus duty. If you are VAT or GST registered you can usually reclaim it, so it is not a final cost.
Find the duty rate for your HS code in the importing country's tariff (for the US, the HTS at hts.usitc.gov). This calculator uses the rate you enter.
How import duty is calculated
Import duty is the tax customs charges when goods enter a country. It is a percentage of the customs value, set by the product's tariff code (HS code) and its country of origin. Import VAT or GST is then charged on the customs value plus the duty.
How import duty is calculated
- Customs value. CIF (goods + freight + insurance) in the EU, UK, India and most countries; FOB (goods only) in the US, Canada and Australia.
- Duty = customs value × duty rate. Some goods also carry an additional or retaliatory tariff, entered separately.
- Import VAT or GST = (customs value + all duties) × tax rate.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate customs duty?
Multiply the customs value by the duty rate for your HS code. On a CIF value of 10,000 at 12%, duty is 1,200.
Is import VAT charged on the duty too?
Yes. Import VAT or GST is charged on the customs value plus the duty, so the duty raises the tax.
Who pays import duty?
The importer of record, unless the sale is DDP, where the seller pays. Check the Incoterm on your contract.
Is the calculator free?
Yes. No sign up. It runs in your browser, and you can copy the result or save it as a PDF.
