How to calculate unit price

Unit price is the price of one unit of a product: price divided by quantity. It shows which pack, size or supplier offer is really cheaper when sizes differ, for shoppers comparing jars and buyers comparing supplier quotes alike.

How to calculate unit price

Unit price = price ÷ quantity. A 16 oz jar at 4.99 costs 4.99 ÷ 16 = 0.312 per ounce. A 32 oz jar at 8.49 costs 0.265 per ounce, so the bigger jar is about 15% cheaper per ounce.

The calculator converts units for you, so you can compare 500 g against 1 lb, or 1 liter against 32 fl oz, as long as both are weights, both volumes or both counts.

Unit price for buyers and sellers

  • Purchasing: compare supplier quotes for different pack sizes on the same basis.
  • Pricing: check your price per unit against competitors before you set a retail price; then use the markup calculator.
  • Shopping: shelf labels do not always use the same unit; this does.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for unit price?

Unit price equals the total price divided by the number of units, such as ounces, grams or items. Convert both offers to the same unit before you compare.

Is the biggest pack always cheapest per unit?

No. Promotions and small packs on sale are often cheaper per unit. Enter both and the calculator shows which wins.

Can I compare grams and ounces?

Yes. Both are weights, so the calculator converts them. Weight cannot be compared with volume or with a count of items.

Is the calculator free?

Yes. No sign up. It runs in your browser, and you can copy the result or save it as a PDF.
