How to calculate commission

Commission is pay based on sales: a percentage of the sale amount paid to a salesperson, agent or broker. The calculator works out flat and tiered commission, adds base salary, and can find the rate when you know the amount.

How to calculate commission

Commission = sale amount × commission rate ÷ 100. Sales of 25,000 at 5% give 25,000 × 5 ÷ 100 = 1,250.

Tiered commission

With tiers, each slice of sales earns its own rate. With 3% up to 10,000, 5% from 10,000 to 50,000 and 8% above, sales of 25,000 earn 10,000 × 3% + 15,000 × 5% = 300 + 750 = 1,050, an effective rate of 4.2%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 5% commission?

Multiply the sale amount by 5 and divide by 100. On 8,000 in sales that is 400.

What is a tiered commission?

A plan where each slice of sales earns a different rate, usually higher as sales grow. Only the amount within each tier gets that tier's rate.

How do I find a commission rate?

Divide the commission by the sale amount and multiply by 100. A commission of 1,250 on 25,000 is a 5% rate.
