Ohio bill of sale form: fill in, print and sign

A Ohio bill of sale records that a seller sold a vehicle, boat or other item to a buyer for a stated price on a stated date. Ohio has no required bill of sale form; the BMV treats a bill of sale as supporting proof. The transfer is made on the title assignment or, for an electronic title, on form BMV 3770.

Is a bill of sale required in Ohio?

Yes for the title: the seller's signature on the assignment on the back of a paper title, or on form BMV 3770 for an electronic title, must be notarized.

How to transfer a vehicle in Ohio

  1. The seller completes the assignment of ownership on the back of the Ohio title, including the odometer reading, and signs in front of a notary.
  2. For an electronic title, the seller completes and signs page 1 of BMV 3770 before a notary and gives both pages to the buyer.
  3. Seller and buyer sign a bill of sale as their record.
  4. The buyer takes the notarized title or BMV 3770 to a Clerk of Courts title office within 30 days. Photocopies of a title are not accepted.

Ohio also offers an online title portal for private person to private person sales, which still follows the same rules.

How to fill in this Ohio bill of sale

The form above opens with Ohio already chosen. Enter the seller and buyer, the county, what is being sold, the year, make, model and VIN (or hull ID for a boat), the odometer reading and the price. The price is written out in words, and the text is written for you as you type. Choose "Yes" under notary acknowledgment to add a notary block, then print two copies and sign them. Download a PDF or an editable Word file, or print.

Rules, fees and forms change. Check the current requirements on the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) website before you sell. For other states, see bill of sale by state or the general bill of sale template.
