What is a credit note?

A credit note is a document a supplier issues to reduce the amount a customer owes on an invoice already issued: for goods returned, a discount given after the sale, short or damaged supply, or tax charged in excess. Under GST it must refer to the original invoice.

What is a credit note?

It is the opposite of an invoice. The invoice raises what the customer owes; the credit note lowers it. In the US it is often called a credit memo.

What a GST credit note must show

  • Supplier name, address and GSTIN; a serial number and date
  • Recipient name, address and GSTIN if registered
  • Number and date of the original tax invoice
  • Taxable value, GST rate and tax amount being reduced
  • Signature of the supplier or authorised person

The supplier shows the credit note in the GST return for the month it is issued. There is a time limit for claiming the tax reduction, linked to the 30 November after the end of the financial year of the original supply; check the current rule.

Frequently asked questions

When is a credit note issued?

When the invoice value must come down after it was issued: goods returned, a discount after sale, short or damaged supply, or tax charged too high.

Is a credit note the same as a credit memo?

Yes. Credit memo is the common US name; credit note is used in India, the UK and most other countries. The content is the same.

Does a credit note need the original invoice number?

Yes. Under GST it must refer to the original invoice, and in any system it is how both sides match the adjustment.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign up and no watermark. Download a PDF or Word file, or print it, as often as you need.

Is my information saved?
