What is a debit note?

A debit note is a document that raises the amount owed on an earlier invoice. A supplier issues it when the invoice was too low, for example extra freight or a price revision. A buyer may also issue one to a supplier when returning goods, asking for the value to be reduced (a purchase return).

What is a debit note?

It is a formal notice that money is owed in addition to, or adjusted from, an invoice. Under GST, a supplier's debit note must refer to the original tax invoice and is reported in the return for the month it is issued.

When to use a debit note

  • The invoice was billed short (wrong rate or quantity)
  • Extra charges were agreed after the invoice, such as freight or packing
  • A price increase applies to goods already invoiced
  • A buyer returns goods and records the claim on the supplier

To reduce an invoice instead, use the credit note format.
