Texas bill of sale form: fill in, print and sign

A Texas bill of sale records that a seller sold a vehicle, boat or other item to a buyer for a stated price on a stated date. Texas has no required state bill of sale form. The seller signs the title and the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U), entering the sales price, and the buyer takes them to the county tax office.

Is a bill of sale required in Texas?

No Texas rule requires a private bill of sale to be notarized. Notarizing it is optional.

How to transfer a vehicle in Texas

  1. The seller signs the Texas title over to the buyer and signs Form 130-U, writing in the sales price.
  2. Seller and buyer sign a bill of sale as their own record of the price, date and condition.
  3. The seller files the Vehicle Transfer Notification within 30 days.
  4. The buyer takes the title and Form 130-U to the county tax assessor collector within 30 days and pays the motor vehicle sales tax.

Until the buyer titles the vehicle, the Texas title record still shows the seller's name, which is why the transfer notification matters for the seller.

How to fill in this Texas bill of sale

The form above opens with Texas already chosen. Enter the seller and buyer, the county, what is being sold, the year, make, model and VIN (or hull ID for a boat), the odometer reading and the price. The price is written out in words, and the text is written for you as you type. Choose "Yes" under notary acknowledgment to add a notary block, then print two copies and sign them. Download a PDF or an editable Word file, or print.

Rules, fees and forms change. Check the current requirements on the Texas DMV (TxDMV) website before you sell. For other states, see bill of sale by state or the general bill of sale template.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bill of sale required in Texas?

No. Texas transfers ownership on the title and Form 130-U, which shows the sales price. A bill of sale is still worth signing as proof of the price, date and condition.

How long does a buyer have to title a car in Texas?

30 days from the date of sale, or 60 days for active duty military. Late filing brings a penalty of up to $250.

Can I use this form for a boat or trailer in Texas?

Yes. Choose boat or trailer under "What is being sold" and enter the hull ID or serial number. Boats and trailers may have their own registration steps in Texas, so check with the agency.
