New York bill of sale form: fill in, print and sign

A New York bill of sale records that a seller sold a vehicle, boat or other item to a buyer for a stated price on a stated date. New York uses form MV-912 as proof of ownership transfer in a private sale. It must show the year and make, the VIN (or HIN for a boat), the date of sale, the price and the names and signatures of buyer and seller.

Is a bill of sale required in New York?

New York has an official form, the Bill of Sale (MV-912). The DMV's guidance on MV-912 does not mention notarization.

How to transfer a vehicle in New York

  1. The seller completes and signs the transfer section on the back of the title.
  2. Seller and buyer sign a bill of sale (MV-912, or one with the same details). For a gift, write that it is a gift and show the price as $0.
  3. For a gift or a sale below market value to anyone other than close family, the seller completes Section 6 of the Statement of Transaction (DTF-802).
  4. The buyer takes the original bill of sale, the title and the other proofs to a DMV office to register and title the vehicle. Buyer and seller keep photocopies.

The same DTF-802 rule applies to trailers, ATVs, boats and snowmobiles, so a boat or trailer sale needs the same care.

How to fill in this New York bill of sale

The form above opens with New York already chosen. Enter the seller and buyer, the county, what is being sold, the year, make, model and VIN (or hull ID for a boat), the odometer reading and the price. The price is written out in words, and the text is written for you as you type. Choose "Yes" under notary acknowledgment to add a notary block, then print two copies and sign them. Rules, fees and forms change. Check the current requirements on the New York State DMV website before you sell. For other states, see bill of sale by state or the general bill of sale template.
