What goes in a dog bill of sale?

A dog bill of sale records that a seller sold a dog or puppy to a buyer on a given date for a given price. It is the buyer's proof of ownership for the vet, the microchip registry, the city licence and the kennel club, and the seller's proof that care and responsibility passed to the buyer.

Pet purchase laws

Many US states have pet purchase protection laws, often called puppy lemon laws, that let a buyer return a dog or get vet costs back if it falls ill soon after the sale. They usually apply to pet shops and breeders, not to one off private sales, and the time limits differ by state. A "sold as is" line cannot override them. Check your state's consumer protection or agriculture department.

Breeder contracts

Breeders often add terms such as spay or neuter requirements, a return to the breeder clause or a health guarantee for genetic conditions. Write them in the warranty and terms box so they appear in the signed document.

How to fill in this dog bill of sale

The form above opens with a filled dog sample. Replace it with your own details and the bill of sale is written for you as you type: the price is spelled out in words, the dog's details print in a table, and both parties get a signature line. Choose "Yes" under notary acknowledgment if the buyer wants it notarized. Download a PDF or an editable Word file, or print two copies and sign both. Your draft stays in this browser only.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bill of sale needed to sell a dog?

No state requires one for a private sale, but it is the simplest proof of ownership and of what was agreed, and kennel clubs and microchip registries may ask for it.

Does a dog bill of sale need to be notarized?

Usually not. Signatures from both parties are enough; add a notary block if the buyer or a breed club wants it.

What should a puppy health guarantee say?

How long it lasts, which conditions it covers, what the buyer must do (such as a vet check within a few days) and the remedy: refund, replacement or vet costs.

Is this bill of sale free?

Yes. There is no sign up and no watermark. Download a PDF or Word file, or print it, as many times as you need.
