What is a GST tax invoice?

A GST tax invoice is the bill a GST registered supplier in India issues for a taxable supply of goods or services. It must carry the particulars listed in Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, such as both GSTINs, a unique invoice number, HSN or SAC codes, the taxable value and the tax at each rate. The buyer needs a correct invoice to claim input tax credit.

How to fill in a GST invoice

  1. Supplier: your legal name, address, state and GSTIN.
  2. Bill to and ship to: the buyer's name, address and GSTIN if registered, and the delivery address if it is different.
  3. Invoice number and date: a consecutive number, unique for the financial year, of up to 16 characters (letters, numbers, hyphen or slash), for example INV/26-27/0412.
  4. Supply type and place of supply: within the state charges CGST plus SGST; between states charges IGST. Write the place of supply with the state name and code.
  5. Items: description, HSN (goods) or SAC (services), quantity, unit, rate and GST %. The taxable value of each line is calculated.
  6. Check the totals: taxable value, CGST and SGST or IGST at each rate, round off, the invoice total and the amount in words.
  7. Sign: add bank details and the declaration, and sign or use a digital signature.

Download the result as a PDF or an editable Word file, or print it. Your draft stays in this browser only, so you can come back to it; nothing is uploaded to our servers.

GST rates and e-invoicing

Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services fall in the 5% or 18% slab, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods, and some items at nil or special rates. Always check the current rate for your HSN code with the HSN code finder or the GST rates list. Businesses whose aggregate turnover is above Rs 5 crore must also report B2B invoices on the Invoice Registration Portal (e-invoicing) and print the IRN and QR code; this form is for businesses below that limit, or for drafts. A composition taxpayer cannot charge GST and issues a bill of supply instead.
